Once you have been awarded a government contract, you now need to deliver. The same thoroughness, accuracy and attention to detail that you displayed in the preparation of your bid will be required of your company throughout your business partnership with the government.

The work you said you'd do must be completed in full and on time, and must meet the quality specifications outlined in the initial bid. A problem complying with the terms of your contract can mean the permanent loss of your government contract, the significant financial benefits it provides and cost you significant financial penalties.

Understand Your Contract

When considering a bid opportunity, when preparing to submit a bid, or when your company begins to execute a government contract, it's wise to talk with a lawyer who can help you understand the responsibilities you have undertaken.

Contract Performance Concerns

Contract performance issues typically arise in three areas:

• Quality control: This is a priority issue. The government wants to know that you have procedures in place to ensure that the product you provide will meet the initial specifications dictated in the request for bid.
• Financial billing and reporting: The government has a specific, preferred format for expense reporting and billing. Following these financial reporting requirements ensures that billing is submitted correctly and payments are not delayed, and that in the event of an audit, financial information is available.
• Misrepresentation of company policies: Companies must follow EEOC and non-discrimination policies mandated by the U.S. government for all government contractors.
